ASR High Ollie Contest

For those of you have ever been to an ASR trade show you know what a mad house it can be. For those of you who have not, let me do my best to explain. Imagine almost every company that has anything to do with surfing and skateboarding displaying their products at the San Diego Convention Center. Then add in all of the employees of those companies. Then add in all of the team riders for all of those companies. Then to top it off in a quirky way, add in all of the models that companies hire to dress ridiculously scandalous while somehow promoting their products. So imagine that crew of people, many of whom are intoxicated, and you can see how it may be a mad house.

Now that you have a bit of a visual, let me tell you about a fun experience I had at the last ASR in January. There are normally a variety of skate contest throughout the trade show that are sponsored by a variety of companies. As a pro I like to enter at least one per show to represent my sponsors properly. This January I chose to enter the high ollie contest.

Growing up skating, we were always stacking decks up to see how many we could ollie. As we progressed and the years went by we were ollieing higher and higher. In the last ten years I have not practiced how high I can ollie. I regularly ollie up and over things that I view as high, but not officially practiced for an event like this. I was realistic going into it. I knew that there were people that do train for the high ollie contest. I knew I could hold my own, but probably would not take first.

As I walked into the room of the convention center that the contest was being held, I saw somebody that almost made me walk away from the contest…DONGER!!!!!!!! Anyone who has skated in the last 20 plus years knows of Donger as an amazing pro. And on top of that he is most well known for his insane ability to ollie high!

I pulled myself together, entered the contest and gave it my best shot. I did not take first, and I did not take last. (See footage of my highest ollie along side this log entry).

It turns out that Donger was an extremely gracious human, along with every other pro out there. It was awesome to see how supportive of each other we all were. I look forward to more and more contests with such positive, gracious and professional pros!

Thank you for reading.
Have a pleasant day!
