Birds Fled From Me
We all grow up listening to music that speaks to us and that music in turn weaves itself into the fabric of our being. Tell me what you isten to and I’ll tell you who you are. Rachel Williams, the mastermind behind Birds Fled From Me, was gracious enough to let House of Cat in on her top ten musicians of all time.
1. Bjork … “She is always fresh yet comfortable and confident in her moves and motions. It seems like she’s achieved success through embracing her collaborators quirks and working them into her own ideas. She’s my ideal. Always using old and new sounds and her beats.”
2. Tori Amos … Emotion! It’s always been important to me not only to be innovative but genuine. In my words, voice and notes. Not one thing should feel forced or false and I think Tori pulls this off without a doubt. She’s my musical mother – someone to hear about hardships and struggles – while Bjork is more a heroine…a fairy god person.
3. Rachels … A contemporary classical group composing the most heart breaking music in the world (ha ha – well, sort of). Here are a few really talented people with a similiar vision coming together under one name (mine!). I feel like this group is my heart pining away. Nothing too pop, nothing too…anything. It’s heavy, light, strong, emotional, voiceless music. I’m a sucker.
4. Ani DiFranco … I got hooked at a young age and memorized all her ripping words, but the problem with Ani is she’s always putting stuff out. You can’t keep up and you doubt it’s all real.
5. Fiona Apple … While I don’t like everything she’s done, her lyrics are KILLER and she’s near crazy modest. She’s got this way of making wordiness sound sexy and clear. Perfect way to get people to listen. It’s her voice and timing for sure and I have a strong feeling she sticks to her guts on a lot of lines. Both second and first albums are front to backers.
6. Chan Marshall (Cat Power) … Minimalism at its most depressed and honest.
7. Jeff Buckley … For his gifted vocals.
8. Roy Orbison … He’s the Sandman.
9. Stevie Wonder … He does it all.
10. Kate Bush … Of course Kate because she’s a space angel.
