Liam Hanna Lloyd – The Reaches of a Creative Mind

Posted on | March 20, 2009 | 2 Comments

mix-media6As a child, Liam Hanna-Lloyd was encouraged by his artist father to explore the reaches of his creative mind, thus launching an artistic exploration that continues today. This self-taught, emerging artist from Victoria, British Columbia has been capturing imaginations and attention with his mixed media pieces combining collage, gold leaf and paint.

A native of Victoria, Hanna-Lloyd exists in a unique environment of rain forest and urban landscape and has been impacted greatly by both. In his artist statement for the recent opening of The Veaux Gallery in untitled-11ii-x-14iiNYC, he explains; “The juxtaposition of owls on telephone lines, hummingbirds peering though apartment windows and grafittied walls being covered in moss have all influenced my work. I have spent my life in this city; from writing on the walls to sleeping in its streets, dancing on its rooftops to smiling on its sidewalks it will forever be a part of me and my work.”

Drawing inspiration for his images from dreams, old photographs, first nation legends and life experiences, Hanna-Lloyd usually begins work with a piece of recycled wood, saying “the beautiful chipped paint, decay or rust has created the first steps for me.” From there, the subjects and composition begin to emerge and the piece “evolves and devolves, gets built up to be taken back down and can take hours, weeks or an eternity.”
