M. Ward – Hold Time

It was M. Ward’s album The Transfiguration of Vincent that hooked me in, and I have since gone on to explore (and enjoy) just about everything that he has released.
Hold Time is the latest release from this Portland-hailing songsmith and it doesn’t disappoint. He balances out his quiet, introverted tendencies with some fuzz guitar and drums, with guest appearances by Jason Lytle of Grandaddy, Tom Hagerman of DeVotchKa, and She & Him partner Zooey Deschanel.
The inimitable Lucinda Williams graces the album with vocals on Oh Lonesome Me, placing a star of approval on Ward’s heartbreak sensibilities and obvious respect of American roots music, which Williams has been championing for decades.
Ward is a prolific artist with much to offer, each of his albums having slightly different angles and elements; yet he never betrays his strengths as a great guitarist and lyricist, with the heart of a poet. Check him out.
