All things artful and curious

Nick Drake – Family Tree

Posted on | March 1, 2009 | No Comments

familytreeNick Drake is one of those quiet giants of my music collection. He gets thrown into “died too soon heroes of ’60s British folk” circles – and rightfully so, but something sets him apart. He uses multiple guitar tunings to create his unique sound, and his lyrics are cryptic and poetic and timeless, but there is something intangible about him. He’s like your dark, weird friend who is hard to be around, but when you share his mood, there is no one better. Family Tree is not for the unanointed. The recordings are lost tidbits that have been circling the die hard fans for years: demos, home recordings, duets with his sister… If you want a good place to start, there are several Nick Drake studio albums – all equally good. However, if you want to go deeper into Nick’s world, this album is a treasure worth exploring, and the liner notes are exquisitely personal.
