10 Things I Love About Record Stores (part 1)

Posted on | April 19, 2009 | 2 Comments

rsd_hand1To be honest, there are a million things I love about record stores.

I’ve been giving them my time, energy and money for as long as I can remember.

Here is an incomplete love-list in honor of Record Store Day.

1. You just might find that treasure you had no idea you were looking for.

2. The people who work in record stores are opinionated, jaded and generally awesome.

3. The elder in line buying the Frank Sinatra reissue cd is just as stoked as the punk teen buying the out of print Capitalist Casualties/Man is the Bastard split lp.

4. You can have face time with humans rather than screen time with your computer.

5. You can hang out for hours and no one cares. In fact, it just makes you one of us.

6. You can do field research on the nerdiest of the nerdy record collectors in their natural environment.

7. If you’re nice and have something interesting to say, you just might make a friend. Or a bandmate.

8. You can stay abreast of the “scene” with a regular once-over of the flyer wall.

9. They might consign your band’s music if you’re not totally lame.

10. They just rule. They are musty, weird little cultural hubs. We all love Amazon and itunes, but if you can and when you can, support your local record store!

Awesome list again, and this one I definitely can identify with. I take a long time pretty much looking at everything, in any store I go to haha. But I was there for this day and it was pretty neat.

I need a good amount of time in a record store too. You just don’t want to miss anything and every store is set up differently, so you have to take some time to get a feel for it.
