Andrew Bird – Noble Beast
Posted on | April 23, 2009 | No Comments
Initially, Noble Beast felt a bit vague and hard to describe. However, multiple listens have revealed a collection of tunes that are thoughtful, subtle and catchy, threaded through the themes of youth, war, loss, love, hate and planetary concern.
The acoustic guitar, voice and violin are the most prominent sounds here, with bass, flute, whistle, clarinet, keys and drums making appearances in this nicely textured, lightweight display of Andrew Bird’s undeniable talents. Word is, he is frightened by how much he likes this album – which is to say that it is delivered to us as a direct reflection of his vision; a great gift indeed.
Andrew Bird’s music is tricky to pin down as his albums have dipped into a lot of genres including swing, pop, alt-country, zydeco, rock, indie and folk. He has experimented with samples and loops, bands and solo stuff, and at this point the linguistically-advanced Bird can grab our attention with anything he does.
If clever songwriting, tight and sparse instrumentation and natural musicianship are your thing, check Andrew Bird’s Noble Beast out…and let me know what you think.
