Thank you, Mari for asking this question. There are a variety of ways people get sponsored in the skateboarding world; sending in “sponsor me” tapes to companies, being seen skating by the right people at the right time, doing well in contests, having a friend hook you up with the team manager…the list goes on. The following is how I originally got sponsored.
There was a local Utah skate contest series every summer for about 5 years in Logan, Utah. At the time, there were not a lot of skate contests so pretty much everyone who was serious about skateboarding in all of Utah went to them and entered. People would travel up to 6 hours to go to them. The summer that I was 19 years old, I ended up taking 1st in two of the contests and 2nd in another.
The person who organized and ran the contests was the owner of United Skateboards. He and I got to know each other really well through the contests and after my placing well in the contests he called me and asked me to skate for United. They were my first official sponsor.
United Skateboards came out with two videos that I had full parts in. After those videos came out, I sent my part as “sponsor me” tapes to a variety of companies to expand my sponsors. I ended up on a truck and a shoe company shortly after. For those of you who are not familiar with skateboarding, you can have a variety of sponsors as long as they are not companies that compete with each other. For example you can only have one board sponsor, one shoe sponsor…
Be on the look out for my next log entry if you are interested in sending out “sponsor me” tapes!!!
