All things artful and curious

Astoria Scum River Bridge

Posted on | April 15, 2010 | No Comments

The Facts:
In NYC there was a leaky pipe that, for 20 years, created a standing pool of water known affectionately as the Astoria Scum River that stretched the width of the sidewalk, making a stinky, dangerous mess.

An unauthorized bridge, made entirely from found and recycled materials, was built by a couple of residents who were tired of stepping over the mess.

The project received much attention from the press and city, and shortly thereafter, the leak was fixed.

This story choked me up a little bit. Something about people taking the time to better their environment, in spite of the negligent tone that the authorities have been known to take. It’s also such a cool glimpse into a community of people who were happy to not tread through the pool of muck, and the authoritative action that a couple of people can inspire.

Art, creativity, making something new out of something old, contributing to your community…this story has it all.
