Mind-Bending Illusion

Here’s something fun to wrap your brain around:

In this image, created by Edward H. Adelson, the squares that are labeled A and B are the exact same color.

But, you don’t have to take my word for it. There’s another image that will leave you rubbing your eyes and scratching your head. The two bars below are the same color as each other, and, as you can see, the same color as both of the labeled squares.

Pretty cool right? Adelson provides a thorough explanation for the illusion, but the nutshell version is that our visual system needs to determine the color of objects in our world, and it has several tricks it uses to account for things like shadows and light. As Adelson says, “As with many so-called illusions, this effect really demonstrates the success rather than the failure of the visual system.”
