Yarn Bombing Around the World

Posted on | April 2, 2010 | No Comments

A couple of months ago I learned a new phrase: Yarn-bombing, which is defined as, “The surreptitious or unauthorized placement of knitted objects on statues, posts, and other public structures.”

I was immediately intrigued and began to wonder about the variety of forms that yarn-bombing could take, and I’ve been keeping my eyes open for evidence of this charming form of street art, but I never heard, or saw anything else about it; until now.

The New Jersey town of Cape May has a street-knitter known only as ‘the Midnight Knitter,” who is wrapping trees in colorful knitwear. The tree cozies are being met with mixed reviews from the townspeople, as some of them are glad to see them, and enjoy the quirky, artsy flair they add to the already artist-heavy town, while other residents feel that the knitwear detracts from the beauty of the homes, and is nothing more than a nuisance. But, authorities are on the case, working to find the identity of the Midnight Knitter, because technically, their art is illegal.

While this case is currently all over the news, it is not the first, nor the only case of midnight knitting. Yarn-bombers can be found all over the world, with a well-known contingent, called Masquerade, based in Stockholm. They even have a photo blog to show off their art.

So there you have it. Street art continues to evolve, and crafters are taking over the night. Things could be worse.
