Turntable for Your Car

It was a format that never really took off, but in 1956, Chrysler was leading the automotive stereo chase with their in-car turntables, know as the Highway Hi-Fi. They developed an arm and needle that would absorb the bumps from the road, and records that played much slower with significantly deeper grooves, which increased the playing time and the chances of the needle staying in the groove.
Despite the high-tech push that car companies provided with their turntables, portable music for cars didn’t gain widespread acceptance until 1968, when 8-track tapes were introduced to the market.
Dark Roasted Blend recently posted an informative article entitled Car Record Players and Other Cool Vintage Devices that is loaded with groovy pictures of people playing records in their cars, levitating french fries, and using typewriters and telephones while sitting in a tree.
