Trading Meat for CDs – The Follow-Up
Posted on | June 4, 2010 | No Comments
Last week I posted the 16th installment of Overheard at the Record Store, an ongoing collection of funny, strange or otherwise entertaining things that I hear at my record store job.
I generally get a few emails/comments/responses about a quote that people like, or something they can relate to, but the following quote generated more questions and discussions than any other quote I’ve ever posted:
“That guy just tried to trade some meat for some cds.”
That sentence has people brimming over with curiosity and I promised that I would find out more, so I went the the source (Hans) and asked him to fill in the details surrounding the now famous quote. Here’s what he said:
“He was a good ol’ boy type with an air of importance around him. While I’m checking his buy, I notice that he has a badge that says United Meat Co. or some shit like that. It was a picture of meat with his face in front of it.”
“He wanted to sit there and chat while I was doing his buy and you could tell from the way he talked that he was a salesman.”
“‘Either of you folks eat steak?’ he asked. And I mean I’m a meat eater but I didn’t want to encourage him at all.
“‘I travel all around the state selling meat door-to-door,’ he continued, and went on to explain that he goes out into the world to garage sales and trades them meat for cds.”
It’s unclear whether he was trying to trade meat for our cds, or sell meat to us, or just let us in on the brilliance of his meat-for-cd hustle, but there you go; a glimpse into the you-can’t-make-this-stuff-up world of the buy counter.
Thanks for the emails and comments.
