A Band of One

The first one-man band that I remember seeing, was Bert in Mary Poppins. I was immediately intrigued by the notion that you could, by utilizing all of your available appendages, create a pretty full and lively sound.
Bert has set a pretty high bar as far as one-man bands go. Check out the knee cymbals, the hanging tambourine, the whip-lash inducing shoulder horn and what sounds like a xylophone on his chest.
Here’s a guy in Montreal named Scott Dunbar, playing a slightly less complicated set-up, but still rocking the one-man band thing with style. I love his resourcefulness, using his traveling case as the bass drum.
What I want to know is, where are all the one-woman bands? A quick search of YouTube didn’t give me much to go on. Maybe it’s time to start thinking about putting a little one-woman band together…or maybe I should just find more people who are keeping this wonderful art alive.
If you know of any great one-woman or one-man band videos, photos or stories, give me a holler. I’d love to put them up here on House of Cat.
