Looking Into the Past

I love the convergence of old and new. There’s something kind of spooky and cool to hold an old record, or coin, and wonder about the people who have held it, enjoyed it, and used it.
When I look at the people in old photographs, I try to get a sense of who they were, and where they were. Sometimes the scenery is too nondescript to tell, but there are plenty of photos floating around that are easy to pin a location on.
Jason E. Powell, a self-described camerist, creates images that capture the balance between old and new, the inevitability of change and the longevity of sound architecture. With his project, Looking Into the Past, Powell finds historical photos, revisits the spots they were taken, and shoots a new photo, capturing the old, new, evolution and humanness of a time and place.
